Dave Obee leads this three-day course, which stresses the need for research in local history and social history as well as family history, and will help participants understand how to use a wide variety of resources and plan further work.

Meditation in Photography — $199

The attention we pay to things when we see them through a camera lens is the beginning of a moving meditation intertwining you, the light and the subject as co-creators of a photographic discovery. The aim is to lose oneself in the doing, taking quite delight in every aspect of making a picture.

We will perform a series of gentle, exploratory exercises to free ourselves of the frustrating habit of putting the end result first (the finished photo). Making pictures is an art of the moment-to-moment discovery; not simply the manufacturing of pictures.

Making Sense with the Sense of Humor — $199

Making sense of this life requires flexibility, imagination and hope. Coping with the ambiguity of it requires humility and courage – the humility to let go, the courage to start again.

Honing the sense of humor can help! Ambiguity is the bedrock of comedy, and if you want to get the joke, you have to let go of your rationality, and surrender to the ridiculous. What better rehearsal for the work of making sense of non-sense in everyday life? What better way to enjoy the moment, or to recover and regroup? In this playshop, we’ll use games, puzzles, jokes, songs, movies and cartoons to explore life from the sunny side of the street. As Corliss reminds us, “Just one little letter separates the comic from the cosmic!”

Travel Sketching with Ink and Watercolours — $199

The history of the traveler’s sketching journal goes back to the earliest field naturalists and explorers. When opened years after the trip, these personal, illustrated volumes are invaluable for stimulating memories and recalling a much richer experience than available through simple snapshot photographs.

Using a personalized kit that’s not much bigger than your passport you will be able to create colourful, small-size artworks and illustrated travel journals anyplace you go, from tropical beaches to Parisian cafes.
