Message from the Fishmaster

MV Charlotte Princess - June 25, 2011

The fishing at Langara has been incredible this year. Eileen Ternier took home the clock for the largest salmon last trip with a forty pound Chinook, a very large fish for this early in the season. We also had three fish in the thirty plus range. Longtime friend of this ship, Ian Todd, finally got into the Captain’s Club with a thirty pounder. The Coho are in early as well. We’ve already had a thirteen pounder on the dock and many in the eight to ten pound range.

Andrews Point has been our hotspot so far this year. The morning bite has been fantastic, with Chinook being taken from seven to eleven pulls. As the day progresses the fish tend to run deeper. When the Chinook stop feeding, they tend to sit on the bottom. If you can manage to get a herring down to them, they will often snap at it. The smaller Chinook are very hard fighters. Many guests have been surprised by having a half hour battle with what turns out to be a fifteen pound fish.

The weather has been great, sunny skies and gentle North West winds. Humpback Whales are very active right now. Yesterday one was broaching for a good half hour at Cohoe Point. We’ve also spotted Orcas and Porpoises. Several Sea Lions patrol the points stealing, stealing salmon from anglers. There’s a way to trick them, which you can ask me about when you get here!
