Langara Fishing Update

Langara Island Fishing Resorts - August 15, 2007

Guests are being entertained by a small humpback whale who is transiting between Cohoe and McPherson Points. He’s not the biggest one ever but he’s quite active and, as always, a good indicator that Needle fish are present.

The best way to target Coho at this time of year is to hit the second or third offshore tide-line, drop down 15 or 30 pulls and keep your boat at trolling speed. A few Chinooks are being caught—shallow, 20 to 50 pulls, and early in the morning. John Russell picked up a 31 lb. Chinook off McPherson early yesterday.

Chinook have become distinctly elusive as the day progresses which is probably a function of the warm summer weather here at Langara. Day after day of sunshine and temperatures in the low 20s (70° F) have the guests wondering if they’ve accidentally been flown to Maui.

Halibut trips to the new “chicken farm” off Pillar Bay are proving very successful, with most people getting their limit of 10 to 15 lb. fish within half an hour. Those with the patience and endurance to catch and release these chickens eventually come across bigger hali in the 20 to 25 lb. range.

Tom MacDonald pulled in a nice 82 lb. halibut fishing on his own at Langara Rocks. So, while the hali trips are nice, sometimes anglers need to follow their instincts and fish away from the pack.
