Hot spot - Bruin Bay!

Langara Island Fishing Resorts - July 10, 2008

Queen Charlotte Island fishingIt has been another epic week of fishing at Langara. Doug Cruise began the proceedings by catching a 50 lb. Chinook from Bruin Bay . Ron Sutherland also caught a 54 in the same place. Most of the action seems to be coming from the east side of the bay, closer to Gunia point.

A personal highlight for me was helping old friend of the ship, Ray Taylor, net his 38 pounder, also in Bruin Bay . Ray, a perfect gentleman, was most cordial in inviting me aboard, even as he asked, "how the !#$* are we supposed to do this with your giant rubber ducky tied to my boat?" My Zodiac has been extensively rebuilt this year, so scuttling was not my first option. "Maybe we could coax the fish around to the other side here," I suggested. Ray conceded we might try this, and as the fish came over easily, we both knew it was ready for the net.

The pinks seem to be moving on, but Coho are now being taken every day with the average size about 10 pounds.

Bottom fishing on the west side has been off this week, mostly due to unstable weather. Luckily some halibut have moved into the area east of Langara Rocks, with nice 20 to 30 pounders being the average. The Pillar Bay hole is almost always automatic, with small halibut taking as soon as we drop down. McPherson Point seems to be the hot-spot for Lingcod right now. Whales are sighted every day at this time of year.
