The fishing has been unreal...
Painter's Lodge - July 2, 2009The fishing has been unreal for the past four weeks. Our guides have been finding fish all around the south end of Quadra Island. During early June the was a large mass of Chinook around the Oyster River area. These fish have now moved in closer to us at Painter’s Lodge and April Point. This has meant great fishing closer to home.
In the last week we’ve seen record numbers of tyees hitting the dock. Notable mentions go to:
- Dan Oldham — 27 lbs
- Heather Richardson — 34 lbs
- Joe Murphy — 26 lbs
- Tanner Zelink — 30 lbs and 25 lbs
- Crutis koepke — 28 lb halibut
- John Rawe — 33 lbs
- Maralyn Butt — 33.7 lbs
- Ray Mattinson — 33 lbs
- Jim Jewitt — 30 lbs
With the great fishing has come weeks of beautiful skies. Its bright and sunny everyday, it seems, and the bite seems to continue everyday. In addition to great Chinook fishing, we’re looking forward to a very strong return of Pinks and Sockeye. We’re expecting Sockeye to open during the late part of July, and DFO should be letting us know very soon. These fish will be coming through the inside passage in the MILLIONS. I can hear the fish cooler staff screaming already…

Still going strong
Canadian Princess Resort - June 29, 2009Fishing hasn't been this great in years. This is what our guest have been saying since we opened on June 19th.
Salmon is still strong with halibuts starting to come in now.
So get off the couch and come out and catch some fish. Prices are great and fishing is best I have seen in five years!

Trip 5 fishing update
MV Salmon Seeker - June 26, 2009Some adverse weather conditions have limited fishing opportunities towards the end of trip number five, although limits of Chinook are still being taken and half a dozen large halibut in the 80 to 90 lb. range were brought home yesterday. A 131 lb. hali topped them all and landed Masterfisherman status for Greg Cowan.
Tom Burdan’s 31 lb. Chinook is leading the charge for the trip trophy, although slightly better weather tomorrow morning might allow someone to beat him out.
Another storm is due to move in late tomorrow afternoon but hopefully won’t impact our change over and, if I have calculated correctly, by the time it hits I should be into my second pint of Kilkenny at the local!
Capt. Zak will be proving these reports for a while with his usual flair for hyperbole!
Some great fishing and good times await any of you heading for Kano this summer.
Tight lines,

Fishing is still awesome
MV Charlotte Princess - June 25, 2009Hey folks,
Fishing is still awesome, with all boats who choose to limiting out on Chinooks and Cohos. Some larger fish are also coming in to the dock.
Yesterday we had a 42 pounder from Andrews Point and a 45 pounder from No Name Point top the list yesterday.
The halibut seem to be everywhere this year, as many people are catching them while fishing deep for salmon. The average Chinook size is around 19-22 lbs. and the average Cohos are 7-8 lbs. Many boats are reporting 20 or more salmon to the boat each day.
Any day now we should see some 50+-pounders hit the dock. Maybe I’ll go catch one right now, just to prove they’re here.
Yes I will do that.

Women's Derby Wrap Up
Painter's Lodge - June 25, 2009Another year and another incredible Women's Derby at Painter's Lodge.
This year's grand prize winner is Marilyn Butt. She bagged a 33.7 lb. Chinook salmon and won a four day/three night fishing package at King Salmon Resort
There was a tie for second place this year. Annalisa Watters & Tina Murphy both landed 30.09 lb. Chinook salmon. Wow!
Sharon MacDonald rounded out the leaderboard with a 26.14 lb. Chinook.
Nice work, ladies!

Don't miss Dianne Gardner's 32 lb. Chinook!
Send to a FriendAwesome opening day, everyone gets Chinook limit
Canadian Princess Resort - June 22, 2009
Opening day brought good weather and plenty of fish.
I haven't seen a day like this for many years, with everybody limiting out on Chinooks. We had 120 people on the water opening day and had 240 Chinooks. They ranged from 10 up to an awesome 27 pounder.
We also caught a number of Coho and Ling cod, of which one weighed a whopping 32 lbs! And our season record for haibut is an 85 pounder caught by Dave Gautier.
Wow, what an opening day!
This season has potential to be our best year for salmon fishing in four years.
Fish on and tight lines,

44 pounder leads the Trip 4 catches
MV Salmon Seeker - June 22, 2009Although salmon fishing has not been quite as spectacular as on our earlier trips, guests are still limiting out on high twenties Chinook. Coho in the ten pound range are showing more frequently on the fish board.
Trip 4 started with a bang on the first afternoon – a 44 pounder was brought in by Sumeet Goswami. Still lots of opportunity to beat that one for the trip trophy, but I think I hear the fat lady singing!
Three 100 plus Halibut on the first full day and no doubt more to come this afternoon as that seems to be today’s objective.
Looks like a break in the weather is on the way, with strong winds forecast for mid week, but hopefully it will turn out to be a short break.
Lots of whale, sea lion, and octopus stories from our returning guests. It’s a jungle out there!

Langara Fishing is Hotter Than Ever
MV Charlotte Princess - June 22, 2009Hey folks, Cookie here again.
The fishing is still hotter than ever with the last two groups limiting out on salmon with many boats reporting 10 Chinook days. The average size is going up, with eight fish over 30 lbs. caught in the last couple of days.
Guinia and Boulder Points, fished shallow at 6-15 pulls, have been producing some big fish and at times a lot of fish. Coho and Andrews have been go to spots in the morning with non-stop Chinook and now Coho action. That’s right, the Cohos have shown up early and in force, keeping the action going all day long.
The bottom fishing has been solid with halibut being caught everywhere around the island. You could catch a hali every time you drop to the bottom off of Cohoe or McPherson points. Larger halis and lings are being caught off of Andrews point and the Lighthouse.
