Oak Bay Marine Group Crew

Scott
Head Guide, MV Salmon Seeker

The twenty foot Boston Whaler outrage slips effortlessly though the water. The ocean is calm like glass as I round Kindakin point. Looks like a good day to head north. As I select a waypoint on the GPS, a pod of pacific white sided dolphins plays a game of “chase the boat”, the marine equivalent of dogs chasing a car. The sun is just about to rise over Emmons bay and I am on my morning “commute” to Freeman rock, the Costco of the Charlottes. It’s a one stop shop and everything’s BIG. I’m excited for what the day holds, maybe a limit of tyees, a hundred pound hali or two? There’s no where I’d rather be.

Crew profileThis will be my seventh season with OBMG, every one of them as a guide on the Salmon Seeker. Prior to working with Oak Bay, I guided out of Port Alberni for 16 years. In 2003, after talking with friends who guided on the Seeker, I made the move and ha-ven’t looked back. The only regret I have is that I didn’t make the move sooner.

My responsibilities as head guide include managing the guide team, orienting the guests and ordering tackle, equipment and bait as needed. However, my biggest responsibility will be to ensure that, as a team, we all work together to guarantee that each guest has the safest, most productive, enjoyable fishing vacation possible.

Aside from the incredible fishing, what I like most about working for Oak Bay is the people. Each season on the Salmon Seeker, many of the same crew return and have become like family to me… a somewhat dysfunctional family, but family none the less! The Seeker is my “home away from home” for the summer.

Fishing in such an extreme environment as the West Coast of the Queen Charlottes, combined with the knowledge gained from fishing and living with the best guides on the coast has enabled me to grow so much as a guide. It is my passion to create a fishing experience for each guest that exceeds his or her expectations. Working for OBMG allows me to do this in a very challenging and fulfilling way.

If you’re interested in working in a pristine, rugged, stunningly beautiful environment and experiencing the most “insane” fishing on the coast, the Salmon Seeker is the place for you.
