Brook – General manager (Northern Resorts)
Head office, Victoria

I have been working for Oak Bay Marine Group for 9 years and in today’s market, nine years is a significant amount of time to spend with one employer.

While pursuing my education in the evening at Royal Roads University, I started with the company as a full-time accounting clerk in the Victoria office. Once I completed my degree, I decided the Northern Resorts would provide the opportunity to work hard, meet new people and save money for traveling. I completed an entire season as Chief Steward on the M.V. Marabell and then went traveling through Southeast Asia. Upon returning to Canada, I was accepted a management position within the Northern Resorts.

After two seasons, I decided to move to Campbell River and take on a new challenge as Marine Operation Manager for Painter’s Lodge and April Point Resort & Spa. Immediately following that season, I was promoted to Operations Manager of Painter’s Lodge – a position I really enjoyed. Starting 2007, a position came available in Victoria. I was asked if I wanted to return to the Northern Resorts as General Manager, which is where I am today.

I enjoy my job because no two days are the same; one day I am in the office planning maintenance projects and the next day I will be in the engine room of one of our ships looking at generators or ballast tanks. I enjoy the logistical challenges of the Northern Resorts. Operating four resorts in three very remote locations with British Columbia is not easy, but it is fun. I enjoy the crew which I work with and, of course, I enjoy fishing. I can honestly say that I have never looked at the clock, waiting for a day to end.

I like working for Oak Bay Marine Group because they offer the opportunity to challenge myself. When I need advice the executive committee operates with an open-door policy, including the President and CEO, Bob Wright. Where else would you be given the keys to a division and asked to make it happen?

Tight lines,
Brook
