Alex – Marketing manager
Head office, Victoria

My career at Oak Bay Marine Group started just like you see in the movies: in the mailroom. I spent some time travelling after school and wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do next when I was hired in 2001. At the time, I had no idea how far that first job would take me.

In the mailroom I took care of the usual shipping and receiving duties and, quite quickly, the scope of my job began to grow. As I learned more about the company I started assisting the resort sales department and eventually became the Reservation Systems Coordinator, responsible for quality control on the thousands of bookings that come through head office every season.

Again, the scope of my job expanded. I became a bit of a champion for Oak Bay Marine Group’s Internet presence which led me to the job of E-Marketing Coordinator, then Marketing Coordinator, and finally Marketing Manager, my position today. I am one of just two people in our in-house marketing team and, as such, am involved in every aspect of marketing our 20 divisions around the world. On a typical day I could be an art director, project manager, copy writer, production coordinator, media planner or statistician, and the variety is one of the best things about by job.

When I started with Oak Bay Marine Group, I had never even considered a career in marketing. But the company has a long history of starting crew on their career paths and I am grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had with Oak Bay Marine Group.
