Position:          Chief Steward
Reports to:                Captain/Manager
 
Job Description:       The Chief Steward is ultimately responsible for all aspects of guest service, guest relations, food and beverage and housekeeping. This position needs to be aware of all of the guest’s personal needs and see that they are taken care of in a professional manner. This leadership position requires an excellent communicator with a commitment to service, quality and cleanliness. 
 
Responsibilities:     
Ÿ     Depending on the resort, the Chief Steward will oversee a staff of 1 to 3 Stewards.
Ÿ     Along with the Stewards, the Chief Steward organizes and maintains the inside of the resort.
Ÿ     The Chief Steward is responsible for the service of breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Ÿ     Upon arrival, the Stewarding department must size up and issue rain suits and boots to guests. It is extremely important that Stewards and Deckhands coordinate to maintain the suits so the zippers function, there is no garbage in the pockets and a constant rotation of dry suits and boots are available.
Ÿ     By following procedures set by Oak Bay Office’s Accounting Department, a trip-by-trip inventory of liquor, beer and merchandise must be kept.   The Chief Steward will be given a float and all sales must be recorded along with a record of galley charges and crew uniforms. 
Ÿ     In cooperation with the First Cook and Stewards, this position must organize the ordering of all dry goods.
Ÿ     It is important to monitor incoming guest manifests and notify the appropriate individuals with regards to special needs or circumstances.
Ÿ     The Chief Steward is also responsible for ensuring that all laundry is washed and folded.
 
Working Conditions         
All four Northern Resorts are located in remote areas off the west coast of British Columbia. All crewmembers work seven days a week, 12 hours a day and are paid on a daily rate. Depending on the resort, our season runs approximately 70 to 100 days. During this time it is important for our crew to eat properly and ensure they get adequate amounts of sleep. All room and board is provided at no charge. Each resort has different crew quarters and you may be required to share a room. Timeout, if arranged at the beginning of the season is available for typically 4 to 7 days. Upon the completion of a full season, OBMG will pay each crewmember a bonus of $10 per day worked. This bonus is accumulated and paid out at the end of the season.

Ÿ     Seafarer’s Medical Examination for MV Salmon Seeker, MV Marabell and MV Charlotte Princess
Ÿ     Working knowledge of “Word” and “Excel”
Ÿ     BONUS CERTIFICATIONS: MED - Basic Safety Training (BST), Survival Craft (SC), Radio Operators Certificate (ROC-M), Occupational First Aid, Level 1 or 3 (OFA 3)
 
Other Requirements
  • Public speaking skills are needed as you will be required to give a speech outlining the resorts amenities, services, mealtimes and where the guests can find help should the need arise.
